Jackson Hole sits in a valley surrounded by the Teton Range — peaks that rise 7,000 feet from the valley floor and create an almost jarring sense of scale that hits you the moment you arrive. Summer and winter are completely different experiences: summer means hiking, rafting, and wildlife spotting without the ski crowds; winter transforms it into a serious ski destination, but the town is equally alive with sledding, snowshoeing, and outdoor hot springs that kids actually enjoy.
Stroller note: Most hiking trails are unpaved and steep; downtown Jackson is walkable but limited stroller routes. Strollers work for paved paths near town but not for the primary activities.
Safety: Very safe town and surrounding areas; wildlife (moose, bears) requires distance respect on trails, but encounters are rare.
$8–15 (boat shuttle; park entry is $35/vehicle for 7 days)
per person
A 7-mile round-trip loop combining a scenic boat ride across the lake (20 minutes, kids love this part) and an easy trail to a waterfall, with zero elevation gain on the return leg.
Take the boat across; skip it coming back.
$60–85
per person
A 10-mile rafting trip through flat water with wildlife spotting — moose, elk, and bison regularly appear on the banks. No rapids, no fear of flipping; kids sit low and watch.
Go early June or September for fewer crowds.
$35–45 (tram only)
per person
The ski resort operates the aerial tramway year-round; ride to 10,450 feet in 12 minutes, then hike alpine trails with zero tree-line obstruction and views across three states. Trails range from 15 minutes to 3 hours.
Bring layers; summit is 30°F cooler than town.
$12–20
per person
Saturdays June–October, the square fills with local produce, prepared foods, and live music. Get bison burgers, fresh juice, and pastries while kids run around a car-free square.
Go at 9am before crowds; most vendors sell out by 11.
$160–220 (lift ticket; ski school $200–300/day, rentals $40–60)
per person
Over 2,500 acres of terrain with a strong kids' ski school program. Runs range from gentle green circles to steep double-blacks. The resort has excellent beginner progression and a mellow bunny hill area.
Book ski school 2–3 weeks ahead in peak season.
1–2 anchor activities per day. Families need breathing room.
Drive to Jackson; check in and walk downtown
Pick up any last-minute supplies; eat early dinner before exhaustion hits.
Sunset viewing at Oxbow Bend or Willow Flats
15–20 minute drive; best light 30 minutes before sunset.
Teton Park Road scenic drive with pullouts
Stop at 4–5 overlooks; takes 1.5 hours total; bring binoculars.
Jenny Lake Trail with boat shuttle
Easier than full hike; boat adds novelty for kids.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort aerial tram and alpine hiking
One or two trails; get down by 1pm for early departure.
Wildlife moves at dawn and dusk — plan at least one early drive (6:30–7:30am) on the Teton Park Road to spot moose and elk before crowds and heat drive animals to cover.
Altitude is 6,300 feet in town; kids (and parents) may feel it as fatigue or headache the first day — drink water aggressively and plan a light first day without high-elevation hikes.
In summer, afternoon thunderstorms build daily June–August; plan major hikes for morning, descend by 1pm, and accept that outdoor evening plans often shift — bring rain jackets for everyone.
Sweet spot
June–August: trails are snow-free, wildlife active, average highs 78°F; December–January: reliable snow, magical winter scenery, Christmas holiday families create energy in town
Avoid
March–April (muddy, trails patchy with snow, unpredictable weather); September (school starts, fewer activities open)
Shoulder season
May (spring wildlife, wildflowers, half the summer crowds, cooler nights); October (fall colors, fewer tourists, but some early snow possible on high trails, layering essential)
