Torres del Paine is a 2,422-square-kilometer national park in Patagonia where you can see three massive granite peaks emerge from morning mist, hike between turquoise lakes fed by glacial melt, and camp in the wilderness without permits or reservations. Most families don't realize you don't have to do the famous W Trek to see the best views — day hikes from lodges let kids ages 8+ summit-level scenery in 4–6 hours.
Stroller note: All trails are gravel, rocky, or dirt. No paved paths. Strollers are impossible. Babies can go in carrier packs on day hikes.
Safety: Weather is the only risk — wind gusts exceed 50 mph, and conditions change in 20 minutes. Trails are well-marked and heavily traveled by families.
Free (park entry $80 foreign adults, kids under 12 free)
per person
4–5 hour round-trip hike to the base of the three granite towers — the most iconic view in Patagonia. Trail gains 700 meters but is non-technical.
Start at 7:30am, wind increases after 1pm
Free (park entry included)
per person
2-hour easy loop walk from central valley lodges to a turquoise lake with three glaciers visible across the water. Almost no elevation gain, flat gravel trail.
Go early for clearer skies and fewer people
$140–180
per person
Boat crosses Lago Gray to the calving glacier face, then a 1.5-hour hike on Grey Glacier itself with crampons. Older kids find it thrilling; younger kids may find the ice walk repetitive.
Book through your lodge day-of if weather is clear
$35–55
per person
Most lodges offer nightly asado — grilled lamb, beef, and vegetables cooked outside. This is the easiest family meal and often the best food experience of the trip.
Ask your lodge about asado timing and book a seat
Free (park entry included)
per person
45-minute walk from the road to a hilltop overlooking the entire northern valley — massive panoramic views with minimal effort. Often skipped because it's short and simple.
Best at sunset, breezy so bring a layer
1–2 anchor activities per day. Families need breathing room.
Arrive at Puerto Natales (2.5 hours south of park). Check into lodging, grab food.
Rent a car in Punta Arenas if doing this independently.
Short orientation walk around town or lodge grounds if already in park.
Acclimatize, settle in, have an early dinner.
Early breakfast, drive to Torres trailhead.
Bring snacks and 2L water per person, pack layers.
Torres Lookout Day Hike (5 hours round-trip).
Start early; wind peaks afternoon. Return by 2pm.
Easy 1-hour Laguna de los Tres Glaciares loop if energy remains.
Flat walk, turquoise water, glacier views, wind-down after big hike.
Gray Glacier boat + hike if weather is clear and kids are 10+. If not, relax at lodge or do Mirador Nordenskjöld viewpoint.
Weather-dependent; ask your lodge guide at breakfast about conditions.
Last-minute souvenir shopping in Puerto Natales or packing for departure.
If flying out same day, leave by 2pm to catch afternoon flights.
Weather changes in 20 minutes — a clear-sky hike can become whiteout wind. Bring a hardshell jacket and base layer for every single person, even if forecast says sunny. Local guides laugh at families in t-shirts at 2pm.
All major lodges provide packed lunches for day hikers. Order the night before at dinner — they assemble sandwiches, snacks, and water. This is simpler than packing your own and costs $12–18 per person.
The W Trek (5-day multi-day backpacking route) is popular but genuinely harder with kids under 10. Day hiking from lodges with nightly hot showers is more fun and less exhausting for families.
Sweet spot
November and December — spring into early summer, wildflowers bloom, daylight until 9–10pm, fewer crowds than January. February still excellent but slightly more tourists and slightly higher prices.
Avoid
June, July, August — winter temperatures drop to freezing, many lodges close, and daylight is only 8 hours. April and May: autumn rains increase and some higher trails close.
Shoulder season
March — still warm and clear but noticeably fewer tourists, prices drop 15–20%, and facilities are fully open. Trade-off: slightly shorter daylight and occasional rain, but weather is still favorable most days.
